Situation

Shell Lubricants was striving to satisfy their customer’s need for the most sustainable and ergonomic package for motor oil in the industry. Moreover, Shell also needed to respond to service operators’ call for an easier-to-use, faster and more economical package. Therefore, the packaging format Shell Lubricants was looking for was expected to provide significant versatile advantages over the traditional rigid packaging.

Opportunity

Shell Lubricant’s need for a new eco-friendly motor oil packaging format that would offer numerous additional advantages brought the company to Scholle Packaging. Working together, Shell Lubricants and Scholle Packaging developed a bag-in-box solution with radical improvements compared to the traditional rigid plastic bottles. The result of the Scholle-Shell relationship is Ecobox™ offering a wide range of benefits to the motor oil producer, retailer, and consumer. Ecobox™ is an example of a packaging solution that offers many more benefits than simply holding the product:

• Using 89 % less material Ecobox™ offers a substantial decrease of land fill waste compared to the equivalent rigid plastic bottles.

• Ecobox™ can be efficiently stacked with 50% more efficient and secure utilization of storage space and transportation.

• Ecobox™ uniquely engineered box, bag and valve help owners and operators of oil change facilities to deliver oil to their customers with 99.9% efficient dispensing without surging, foaming, splashing or any product loss.

• The bag containing the oil in the Ecobox™ carton is designed to help improve speed and ease of use compared to bottles, as it requires less handling than quart bottles.

Results

The Ecobox™ is an exceptional opportunity for Shell Lubricant’s customers to expand their specialty oils offerings without the need for bulk storage. Currently Ecobox™ is available for Pennzoil®, Quaker State® and Shell Rotella® products in the US and Canada. Shell Lubricants has plans to eventually expand the Ecobox™ as a global offering for customers and consumers from all over the world to enjoy the unique benefits the system has to offer.

Shell® Drives Success With Scholle Bag-In-Box

Situation

GoodWest Industries® started as a small dairy in Pennsylvania, USA and has grown into a multi-national company specializing in shelf-stable dairy products, iced coffee, liquid sugar, iced tea and nacho cheese. GoodWest, a vertically-integrated company, produces its own line of dispensing equipment available to college cafeterias, quick-serve restaurants, gas stations and coffee shops.  

With continued growth over a 15-year period using Scholle bag-in-box packaging, GoodWest was ready to take the next step in production and market penetration and needed a reliable, high-speed low-acid filler to meet customer demand.

Strategy

Through a series of in-depth planning sessions and development phases, Scholle and GoodWest were able to define a strict set of criteria for a successful low-acid bag-in-box filler. High throughput, sterilization and aseptic filling ability were a priority for the project in order to meet GoodWest’s production and quality needs.

Results

The Scholle SureFill® 30 Low-Acid filler has since increased GoodWest’s production capabilities by nearly 70%. Integrated fault management and tracking features allow GoodWest production staff to quickly respond to any issues; maximizing line time. The filler is versatile and allows for filling through different spouts and can work with several Scholle fitments, allowing for future product and market expansion.
