SCHOLLE PITCHES IN TO AID TSUNAMI RELIEF

03/31/2005 | Water is really the staff of life. Clean water is becoming one of the scarcest commodities on earth. In times of emergencies, clean water can make the difference between life and death.

Scholle bags are excellent containers for water. So when the tsunami hit South Asia back in December, Scholle was called upon to provide bags for water. It is wonderful to know that Scholle bags were involved in saving lives.

In one story, an American company, Enviremedial Services Inc., donated a mobile water purification system to Sri Lanka. But when their staff traveled to the tsunami area and got the system up and running, they realized that the people had no way of carrying or storing the water except for makeshift filthy containers that just contaminated the water all over again.

Somebody remembered the bags that go into wine boxes and contacted the Australian Wine Association, who directed them to Scholle. Scholle Australia donated 10,000 3-liter water bags which were shipped to Sri Lanka under the auspices of the Australian Red Cross and OPAL, an Australian aid organization.

According to Eileen Miller of Enviremedial, “The bladders worked perfectly. We filled them with water, piled them onto open trucks, and drove them to the different villages. The people were able to easily carry the bags, and they saved the bags for refills. The bags really saved lives!”

Half way around the world, in the J.W. Automarine plant in Fakenham, England, Scholle employees pulled together to fill a very large order of water storage flexible tanks, holding anywhere from 3.5 to 30 tonnes of water. Ordered by Oxfam, the Japanese Disaster Relief Team, and the United Nations, these dams were shipped to the tsunami area to store clean water for the victims.

According to Malcolm Felmingham, sales director for J.W. Automarine, “It was one of the largest orders we ever had, and we only had one month to make 200 flexis. But everyone appreciated the magnitude of the whole effort, and it was all hands to the pumps, so to speak.”
