VASKA, a Berkeley-based producer of green, botanically-based laundry care products for the commercial, institutional and consumer markets, is pleased to announce the initial introduction of its bag-in-box packaging at Sam’s Club Stores in California and Nevada. The new package called, Jerribox®, consists of a plastic bag contained within a 50% post-consumer recycled paperboard exterior. The Jerribox® saves approximately 62%* plastic usage compared to the plastic bottles that are currently the industry standard.

The Jerribox® has two key components, the exterior carton and the delivery system. The delivery system is composed of the inner plastic bag, plastic collar and push-button dispensing tap. The inner two-ply bag structure is a polyethylene/nylon blend. Once filled the rigid collar secures the inner bag to the exterior carton, providing support and easy access to the dispensing tap. The entire delivery system is provided to the processor in one pre-assembled compact cartridge.

The 150 liquid-ounce 100-load package is supplied by Scholle Packaging of Northlake, IL. According to Scholle Packaging’s Market Segment Director, Stephen Lopiano, “Vaska came to us asking for a new approach to packaging that guarantees an effective delivery of laundry liquids while being environmentally considerate. We are proud to help Vaska introduce the Jerribox®, the next generation package to the laundry category.”

Julia Fry, CEO of Vaska, sees the introduction of the Jerribox® as a necessary step. “Vaska’s approach to manufacturing is to create the safest, most effective laundry care products, and packaging is a key component. Scholle was a great collaborator because they share our environmental goals and our focus on performance.”

In addition to the Jerribox®, VASKA’s laundry line includes 48 oz and 96 oz lavender scented and unscented herbatergent™, oxybleach (non-chlorine), herbasoft fabric softener and spotoff spot remover. Many of VASKA’s products carry the EPA’s DfE seal and all are biodegradable and gray water safe.

Vaska is currently filling the Jerribox® with its lavender scented herbatergent. The Company plans to make the Jerribox® available to other retailers in 2010.

Scholle Packaging’s Materials Science Lab is based in Northlake, IL USA. Our workload is very diverse, but our main function is to work with the Global Packaging Development Group with evaluation of new films, fitments and bag configurations.

The Lab often gets involved with customers when new products are being qualified. For example, we can perform compatibility testing of their product in the exact bag structure they are considering. This expedites the commercialization process by preventing placment of a package in the field and finding out that it doesn’t work due to product migration, seal failures or environmental stress crack failure.

Some products require UN DOT testing. Our lab has drop testing capability, which is one of the tests required to certify a package. We can run this test in order to do initial screening of the package. When certification is required, we can assist the customer with finding labs that can perform the full UN DOT certification testing.

Another area we can help our customers with is transportation testing. We have a vibration table which is very useful when determining if the bag to box fit is correct. If it is not, there will be too much flexing of the bag which causes flex crack holes and leakage in the field.

For a more complete listing of tests we run on a regular basis, please see the chart below.

The Materials Science Lab team is made up of highly-trained and educated people. Collectively, the experience within the group at Scholle totals more than 50+ years. They are a very innovative group and are always coming up with new ways to test development samples, collect data and researching new techniques that can be used in the lab. Together we can solve any problem.

–Amy Glawe // Manager, Materials Science Lab

Scholle Packaging first started conducting business in China in the early 1990’s, operating in the tomato paste industry selling aseptic drum bags into then, military-owned production companies. Diversification drove market development and by the mid 90’s Scholle began supplying to a number of multi-national food and beverage companies with their own newly-invested production facilities in China. At this time all packaging was imported into China and manufactured at the Scholle Packaging facility in South Australia.

The continued growth of the business led to the next step for Scholle which was to invest in our own production facility based in China, producing the range of products required to meet market demands. The locally-resourced facility created the ability to get even closer to our customers by providing a local level of service and after-sales support. Scholle Packaging (Suzhou) was set up in Oct 2003. The success of the facility has led to a number of expansions in the following years adding increased capacity and capability for the diverse range of products required to service the China domestic market and also the export market of North Asia.

One of the keys to Scholle’s success was the approach made to Quality for the China business. The Scholle philosophy is one where quality shall not be compromised wherever the manufacturing unit is located. From the outset, it was imperative for the success of the business that our customers experienced a seamless transition from Australian supply to China supply in all areas. Scholle introduced the same quality systems as held in the Australian facility from day one.

Our quality systems include an integrated Management System which encompasses an internal quality management system for Good Manufacturing Practices including external accreditations of ISO 22000 (combined accreditations of ISO 9000 & HACCP).

In addition to the non-mandatory accreditations, Scholle China is also certified by the local legislative accreditations as follows:

Chinese Inspection & Quarantine (CIQ): a mandatory certification for all products to be exported out of the country.

Chinese Quality Certification (CQC): a non-mandatory accreditation.

Quality System Certification (QS): from the General Administration of Quality Supervision, a mandatory certification for the domestic sales of food packaging.

Scholle China is also an approved manufacturing site by many of our multi-national customers for products like post-mix syrup, dairy, chemicals and beverages for the supply into the region.

Ken Ong – General Manager, North Asia

The United States and parts of South America are rapidly adopting this new retail package as an environmentally-conscious alternative to glass bottles.

Earlier this year, Scholle Packaging unveiled a new website dedicated entirely to box, or cask, wine: About Boxed Wine. This website provides insight and resources for all levels of involvement in the wine industry; wine makers, distributors, retail sellers and wine drinkers.

Over time, the site has been populated with some of the best-known box wine from around the globe. Visitors can read reviews of these wines and even rate and review them. There are also boxed-wine related blogs and video content written with the wine lover in mind. New content and wines are being added all the time, so be sure to check in regularly or leave a comment with some suggestions for the site.

With the success that AboutBoxedWine.com has brought, we decided to take a look around the web and find some other box wine resources. Here are a few:

Revolutionary Food Service Package Promotes Freshness of Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Increases Shelf Life, and Reduces Environmental Footprint

April 13, 2009, Oroville Calif.—California Olive Ranch (COR) has introduced a new food service package for its award-winning, certified extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) designed specifically for the food service industry. The innovative technology utilizes the wine industry’s bag-in-the-box design wherein the bag collapses as the olive oil is dispensed. This prevents oxygen from coming in contact with the oil improving product freshness, consistency in flavor, while increasing the shelf life of the oil up to a year. Available now in a 2.5-gallon size, the 5-gallon package will begin shipping in December. California Olive Ranch will ship each of its EVOO varieties in this new package—Arbequina, Arbosana, and Koroneiki—as well as the California Olive Ranch proprietary EVOO blend.

To improve on its previous packaging and provide the food industry with a better packaging alternative, COR collaborated with Scholle Packaging for over a year and solicited input from dozens of food service customers, chefs, buyers, and distributors. The new packaging meets several goals: First and foremost, the package promotes and preserves the freshness and flavor of the oil. Second, it is significantly more environmentally friendly than the previous packaging. Third, the package is easier to use, takes up less room, and reduces freight costs per unit versus the previous packaging. “There is increased demand for high quality California extra virgin olive oil, and we kept hearing from our food service customers about the need for a California product that would be better for the environment,” says Claude S. Weiller, COR’s vice-president of sales & marketing.

Features and benefits of the new collapsible packaging compared to COR’s previous packaging:

Collapsible Bag: The collapsible bag, combined with a 100% nitrogen flush, protects the freshness and flavor consistency of the oil for up to 12 months

Improved Environmental Footprint: The 100% recyclable corrugate box is made up of 75% recycled materials and requires 6% less material

More Compact: 6% more compact for easier storage, more efficient shipping, and lower per-unit shipping costs

Improved Spout: Improved spout design is easier to use, virtually eliminates drips and waste

Visual Instructions: Step-by-step, illustrated usage instructions accommodates the language needs of all restaurant staff

Informative Labeling: Food-grade product labels can be scanned by UPC readers and now contain standard food label nutrition information

Since its first harvest in 2001, the EVOO olive oils from California Olive Ranch continually earn high praise and receive numerous awards. Prized among chefs and food service professionals, retail sizes are also available. Distributed nationally, California Olive Ranch certified extra virgin olive oils generally are priced lower than other branded products of comparable flavor and quality.
