With a widely-recognized need for a smarter, more sustainable package for car fluids, Scholle Packaging has taken the initiative of providing a bag-in-box solution that addresses all the special requirements of auto-chemical producers, distributors and end-users.

Scholle’s Carefully-Designed Automotive Bag-In-Box Solution:

• Uses 89 % less plastic than comparable rigid packaging, offering a substantial decrease of land fill waste.

• Efficiently stacks with 50% more utilization of storage space and transportation.

• Allows 99.9% efficient dispensing without surging, foaming, splashing, or any product loss.

• Offers exceptional durability and speed of use, increasing efficiencies for the end-user.

Automotive Industry Facts

• The total number of automobiles in the world averages 0.17 per adult.

• The automobile is the most recycled consumer product in the world today (95 percent of retired autos are processed for recycling each year).

• The United States has the largest oil pipeline system in the world, with nearly 200,000 miles of pipeline.

• Your car actually uses six different fluids: motor oil, coolant, power steering fluid, brake fluid, transmission fluid and windshield washer fluid.

• On average, Americans drive their passenger cars and trucks just over 10,000 miles per year. That translates to nearly 900 million oil changes.

• In one year, Americans use at least 1.1 billion gallons of oil in their vehicles. Much of this oil is reused and recycled.

• The world’s largest waste oil processing plant is located in East Chicago, Indiana. The facility recycles about 75 million gallons per year of crankcase and industrial oil and 20 million gallons per year of oily wastewater.

• One gallon of used oil provides the same 2.5 quarts of high-quality lubricating oil as 42 gallons of crude oil.

This year only, Process Expo co-located with the Institute of Food Technologist’s Annual Meeting and Food Expo.

IFT/Process Expo was held in Chicago at McCormick Place — Expo on July 18-20. Scholle was one of many industry suppliers who took advantage of this opportunity to showcase products and services.

From a supplier’s perspective, we were excited to be a part of this one-time food industry event that encompassed everything from food science and ingredient technology to the latest in processing and packaging.

Much like the packaging industry, science and business drives and defines the food industry. Without science there would be little growth and maturity. But without business and market drivers what’s the point?

We saw market drivers that were very apparent during the show and required specialized packaging considerations.

A continued consumer demand in health and wellness benefits drove an increase in new value-added ingredients and products that need highly-protective packaging to keep nutrients intact.

Visitors to the booth were concerned with food safety and security, as well as, packaging that could give them competitive advantage over rivals.

Processors are looking for suppliers that can help add value to their product while cutting costs. Although not a new business challenge, today’s leading companies have already taken lean steps. Getting more out of less is getting increasingly difficult.

Using Scholle Packaging throughout the value chain can help lower operations costs while delivering a better product—even in lean economic times.

For Inbound Materials:

Scholle A2B, a new full-service material logistics operation, by Scholle Packaging provides industry-leading packaging, supply chain management from origin to destination, shipping, documentation and customs. Scholle’s global footprint; advanced packaging experience and product knowledge gives processors real-time advantage of inbound materials while cutting logistics costs.

To Lower Operations Costs:

Scholle closed-system drum liners and bag-in-box systems help processors address food safety issues while offering a fresher, safer product. Scholle open-top replacement systems save processors warehouse space, packaging and shipping costs and reduces material handling.

Empty bag-in-box arrives and stores flat. Once filled, bag-in-box’s compact footprint and low product-to-package ratio reduces outbound shipping and warehousing costs.

For the End-User:

The same properties that make Scholle Packaging a smart choice for suppliers add value to the end-user. Lowered shipping and storage space costs carry through the value chain. The high-tech properties that help with HACCP concerns and food safety keep products fresh from fill to finish. Easy-to-fill taps and fitments minimize product exposure for the foodservice operator or home-use, protecting your brand’s integrity.

Wellness in Scholle Brazil is not just about health. Our program concentrates on four aspects of our own culture: operational excellence, safety, ethics and sustainability. Wellness is a part of sustainability and focuses on improving the quality of life and increasing the satisfaction of Scholle employees. Scholle Ltda’s Wellness Program mission is to promote social development and preserve the environment in Vinhedo while adding value to Scholle employees and society.

As part of this program, Ricardo Burgos, HR Manager at Scholle Ltda., has created an annual Wellness Week with the help of four committees within Scholle Ltda: the Council, the Recycling Committee, the Social Committee and the Environment Committee.

The week-long event focused on activities and educational moments that all related to sustainability:

A plant-wide presentation of the film, “The Story of Stuff;” a documentary based on patterns of consumption and identifying the connections between various environmental and social problems.

A group activity to promote social interaction, teamwork and leadership.

A recycling game that taught all the employees
the correct disposal of waste that they produce.

A group discussion on ecological footprint. Employees evaluated the impact of their actions in daily life and how it reflects on the environment. The exercise included tips to preserve the environment through simple changes in habits.

A Wellness Game where all the employees could have fun while reinforcing the areas of sustainability learned over the week.

Roberta Carbonari, a member of the Social Committee, feels the opportunities presented in this program are the positive interaction between different departments, an increase in employee’s motivation and better 0verall productivity. “In the Wellness Program, the employees can interact among themselves and thus be able to interact better within the community they live in.”

The new package called, Jerribox®, consists of a plastic bag contained within a 50% post-consumer recycled paperboard exterior. The Jerribox® saves approximately 62%* plastic usage compared to the plastic bottles that are currently the industry standard.

The Jerribox® has two key components, the exterior carton and the delivery system. The delivery system is composed of the inner plastic bag, plastic collar and push-button dispensing tap. The inner two-ply bag structure is a polyethylene/nylon blend. Once filled the rigid collar secures the inner bag to the exterior carton, providing support and easy access to the dispensing tap. The entire delivery system is provided to the processor in one pre-assembled compact cartridge.

The 150 liquid-ounce 100-load package is supplied by Scholle Packaging of Northlake, IL. According to Scholle Packaging’s Market Segment Director, Stephen Lopiano, “Vaska came to us asking for a new approach to packaging that guarantees an effective delivery of laundry liquids while being environmentally considerate. We are proud to help Vaska introduce the Jerribox®, the next generation package to the laundry category.”

Julia Fry, CEO of Vaska, sees the introduction of the Jerribox® as a necessary step. “Vaska’s approach to manufacturing is to create the safest, most effective laundry care products, and packaging is a key component. Scholle was a great collaborator because they share our environmental goals and our focus on performance.”

In addition to the Jerribox®, VASKA’s laundry line includes 48 oz and 96 oz lavender scented and unscented herbatergent™, oxybleach (non-chlorine), herbasoft fabric softener and spotoff spot remover. Many of VASKA’s products carry the EPA’s DfE seal and all are biodegradable and gray water safe.

Vaska is currently filling the Jerribox® with its lavender scented herbatergent. The Company plans to make the Jerribox® available to other retailers in 2010.

Scholle Packaging’s Materials Science Lab is based in Northlake, IL USA. Our workload is very diverse, but our main function is to work with the Global Packaging Development Group with evaluation of new films, fitments and bag configurations.

The Lab often gets involved with customers when new products are being qualified. For example, we can perform compatibility testing of their product in the exact bag structure they are considering. This expedites the commercialization process by preventing placment of a package in the field and finding out that it doesn’t work due to product migration, seal failures or environmental stress crack failure.

Some products require UN DOT testing. Our lab has drop testing capability, which is one of the tests required to certify a package. We can run this test in order to do initial screening of the package. When certification is required, we can assist the customer with finding labs that can perform the full UN DOT certification testing.

Another area we can help our customers with is transportation testing. We have a vibration table which is very useful when determining if the bag to box fit is correct. If it is not, there will be too much flexing of the bag which causes flex crack holes and leakage in the field.

For a more complete listing of tests we run on a regular basis, please see the chart below.

The Materials Science Lab team is made up of highly-trained and educated people. Collectively, the experience within the group at Scholle totals more than 50+ years. They are a very innovative group and are always coming up with new ways to test development samples, collect data and researching new techniques that can be used in the lab. Together we can solve any problem.

Scholle Packaging first started conducting business in China in the early 1990’s, operating in the tomato paste industry selling aseptic drum bags into then, military-owned production companies. Diversification drove market development and by the mid 90’s Scholle began supplying to a number of multi-national food and beverage companies with their own newly-invested production facilities in China. At this time all packaging was imported into China and manufactured at the Scholle Packaging facility in South Australia.

The continued growth of the business led to the next step for Scholle which was to invest in our own production facility based in China, producing the range of products required to meet market demands. The locally-resourced facility created the ability to get even closer to our customers by providing a local level of service and after-sales support. Scholle Packaging (Suzhou) was set up in Oct 2003. The success of the facility has led to a number of expansions in the following years adding increased capacity and capability for the diverse range of products required to service the China domestic market and also the export market of North Asia.

One of the keys to Scholle’s success was the approach made to Quality for the China business. The Scholle philosophy is one where quality shall not be compromised wherever the manufacturing unit is located. From the outset, it was imperative for the success of the business that our customers experienced a seamless transition from Australian supply to China supply in all areas. Scholle introduced the same quality systems as held in the Australian facility from day one.

Our quality systems include an integrated Management System which encompasses an internal quality management system for Good Manufacturing Practices including external accreditations of ISO 22000 (combined accreditations of ISO 9000 & HACCP).

In addition to the non-mandatory accreditations, Scholle China is also certified by the local legislative accreditations as follows:

Chinese Inspection & Quarantine (CIQ): a mandatory certification for all products to be exported out of the country.

Chinese Quality Certification (CQC): a non-mandatory accreditation.

Quality System Certification (QS): from the General Administration of Quality Supervision, a mandatory certification for the domestic sales of food packaging.

Scholle China is also an approved manufacturing site by many of our multi-national customers for products like post-mix syrup, dairy, chemicals and beverages for the supply into the region.

Ken Ong – General Manager, North Asia

The United States and parts of South America are rapidly adopting this new retail package as an environmentally-conscious alternative to glass bottles.

Earlier this year, Scholle Packaging unveiled a new website dedicated entirely to box, or cask, wine: About Boxed Wine. This website provides insight and resources for all levels of involvement in the wine industry; wine makers, distributors, retail sellers and wine drinkers.

Over time, the site has been populated with some of the best-known box wine from around the globe. Visitors can read reviews of these wines and even rate and review them. There are also boxed-wine related blogs and video content written with the wine lover in mind. New content and wines are being added all the time, so be sure to check in regularly or leave a comment with some suggestions for the site.

With the success that AboutBoxedWine.com has brought, we decided to take a look around the web and find some other box wine resources. Here are a few:
